The Scarpantoni family have always produced wines in the most natural and traditional methods to maintain all the rich regional and varietal characters of the fruit. This 2017 PRESERVATIVE FREE Vermentino has been produced using minimal gentle handing with soft basket pressing, no preservatives and bottled early to maintain the intense youthful characters.
The production of making wine without preservatives (which just means without sulphur) is actually quite difficult, and it means the wine has to be made absolutely clean and filtered well and bottled in a sterile environment as quickly as possible after the completion of fermentation in order to prevent any bacterial or yeast spoilage which will make the wine go off in a short space of time. The downside of this is that the wines, even though they show a lot of fruit, do not have a lot of complexity because they have to go straight to the bottle. They just are not one of our normal whites without sulphur. With this 2017 Vermentino, I found that it is quite raw and funky as soon as you open it with lots of pear and citrus, a touch of green apple with crisp acid and a lovely drying grapefruit and orange rind finish. but if you leave it for a day or so after opening it, the palate fills out even more, and that’s how it's best preferred.
This wine is ideal for the person who enjoys wine as natural as you can get.
